Karthik Calling Karthik

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Ok before I start writing my review, let me tell you one thing, if you guys are pretty much interested in psychology & human mind, you should watch this movie. The way they have justified the theme of the movie is really appreciable & convincing. In simple words, its not just typical bollywood style. After Bhul-Bhulaiya, I think this is the second movie, which tackles around the human mind & psychology.

Ok, I know guys you are more interested in the review, rather than the suggestions so let’s get back to topic. :-) So by this time, even if you haven’t seen this movie, you must have guessed that this movie is based on a guy, Karthik (that’s Farhan) who is one of the least confident guy, always harrassed by his boss, staying alone as a bachelor & always left unnoticed in the office. He could never express his feelings to his collegue & hottest girl in the office that’s Shonali (Deepika.)

Everyday he drafts a mail to her with his feeling or how much does he miss her but could never do beyond just saving all those mails in his own mailbox, just imagine more than 1300 mails in his drafts. Ummm!!! Interesting….

Karthik, always keeps on blaming himself for the death of his own elder brother who actually doesn’t even exists on the earth. One day, he reaches the stage of super-frustration & decides to commit sucide, but just before he is about take his overdose of sleeping pills, his phone starts ringing, & he found his own voice on the other end which claims himself as Karthik. Wooooo!!! That’s where movie starts picking up, the person on the phone knows all the secrets of our very own Karthik, even including his ATM card’s PIN number. Obviously scared Karthik, could not believe this thing, he starts investigating where these calls getting from, but no clue found in the telephone exchange as well.

Next day again in the morning, he gets the same call, this time caller wins the Karthik’s trust & starts instructing him towards the better life & Karthik’s life changes overnight, he gets his same job again with the promotion, also his dream girl falling for him.

The calls keep coming daily early in the morning & Karthik finally becomes confident , happy for his better changed life but the unidentified  Caller, warns himself not to mention about this call to anyone as nobody will believe him & everyone will consider him as the mentally unstable. But in a weak moment with overflowing emotions, Karthik makes mistake & reveals the secret to his girlfriend Shonali.

And as very much expected, she doesn’t believe this, she asks him to consult a psychiatrist, one step further she insists on not picking up the calls anymore. And here is the twist, this makes the caller furious who, in turn, destroyes Karthik’s life exactly the same way he has made it better.

Overall very nice movie with strong & convincing justification based on the human conscious & subconscious mind. Worth watching once. Honestly speaking music score is just not bad, better than average, I mean obviously from my perspective. I liked songs “Hey ya!”, “Uff! teri adaa”, others I don’t even remember ;-)

P.S. By the way, I’m slightly confused with the term “Safe Guy” in this movie :-) Girls could you please explain us what do you actually mean by “Safe Guy”? I mean, should guys take it as a compliment or as an adjective? ;-)

Slumdog Millionaire

Monday, February 16th, 2009

“Slumdog Millionaire” so finally today I watched this movie. Though, the storyline is familiar, all actors have done their job excellently. Hats off to Mr. A. R. Rahman for excellent music composition once again. But apart from this,I was still wondering why is this movie being discussed so much? I mean I personally did not find anything really outstanding or different in this movie. No I do not mean that movie is not good, yes its good but what’s so different in this movie that made its way to Oscars. I mean, personally, there are so many nice movies which are different & unique but unfortunately those movies could impress only local crowds in respective countries. In fact this is what Mr. Madhur Bhandarkar (India) has shown in his “Traffic Signal” but I don’t think that movie was appreciated as much as this one. In the whole movie Mumbai slum areas and dirty areas of Mumbai has been shown nothing else. Not even a single snapshot of Marine drive or south Mumbai has been shown. Come on Mr. Danny Boyle every coin has 2 sides then why could not you show the other side of the coin & yes,You could have done that. Atleast when the small guy says “We’ll leave in big house on Harbour road…” Why can’t you show the Harbour road of Mumbai? Let world know the other side of the coin. Let me describe you one more incident in the movie.

One foreigner couple came to India to see Taj Mahal. The poor guy is acting as a tourist guide but for some reason, cab driver starts beating this poor guy. Oh!!! then this foreigner lady comes forward to save guy and asks driver not to beat the guy then the guy says “You wanted to see a bit of real india? Here it is…” Come on!! I wasn’t aware of that. Probably I guess only Danny Boyle is the reason, this movie is running for the Oscars…

Definitely, as expected Music by A.R. Rahman is amazing & in fact all the actors in the movie done very well. Feeling really proud & nice that Indians have set a new benchmark but I’m really upset with the way Mumbai has been portrayed in this movie.

I totally agree with Mr. Priyadarshan’s comments on this movie.Click Here to see what Mr. Priyadarshan said In fact I’m not sure but few days back I heard Mr. Bachchan also wrote something on his blog, that was absolutely correct but I guess for some reason Mr. Bachchan had to clarify his statements, that was very unfortunate.

If you ask my opinion about this movie, I’ll give it 3 star, that too only for background scores & actors. I personally feel movie is good but it could have been better since its incomplete & oriented towards the bad side of the city. Biased direction. I feel, its not the real Mumbai, its not the real India What Danny Boyle has shown on screen. In my opinion, Mr. Danny Boyle, you do not know what the real India & real Mumbai is all about…

Raaz - The Mystery Continues

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Today, I watched Raaz2. Very ordinary movie. If someone has watched this movie, could you please tell me, is this a horror movie, romantic story or just a funny sequence? In short I’ll tell you guys, Raaz-1 was better than this. Now if you rate Raaz-1 as an average movie then you can guess what I’m talking about.

In whole movie there are hardly few minutes (yes literally I mean few minutes) which you might find scary, but that too depends. If you find a pair of hands emerging from a bathtub to hurt the girl taking bath Or lamps going off or flickering horrible then probably you will find those scenes scary. But if you are expecting this movie full of terrified scenes then really not worth.

And even one step further you might find certain scenes/sequences very funny at a moment. The whole storyline is around a man’s revenge who wanted to shut down a polluting pesticide plant but he was murdered. This dead man’s spirit tortures actress just beacuse she has ambition to be rich at any cost & not bothered being morally or immorally.Oh!!! Come on.

Not worth at all. Probably in few months movie might be premiered on TV then you can take a look but not worth wasting 3 hours in theatres.
